Gang boss "Little John" Sarto (Robinson) abandons his life of crime to seek class in Europe only to return penniless after a few years. But his gang is now run by Jack Buck (Bogart), who takes Sarto out on a one-way ride. Sarto escapes, hiding in a monastery while plotting a way to regain his criminal empire, but he is gradually transformed by the gentle monks.
